The climate in Zaragoza is Mediterranean, with warm, bright, continental summers, intense winters, mild autumns and mild spring day light and accompanied by the citys characteristic and famous northerly wind, 'El Cierzo'. Zaragoza's climate makes visiting this city a possibility at any time of year, although be sure to pack your winter woolies if you come during December of January!
The climate in Zaragoza is described as a semi-desert / Mediterranean climate but do not be overwhelmed by this weather terminology because Zaragoza has a climate that makes visiting this city at any time of year an unforgettable experience for tourists.
Its geographical location, in the vast and deep Ebro Valley and its relative proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, means that city enjoys hot summers in with bright, clear, sunny days in which temperatures can exceed 35 degrees, with some days when the thermometre reaches 40 degrees and above. Perfect weather for enjoying the many parks around the banks of the Ebro
Winters are cold, without being extreme, with several days of frost and freezing temperatures during the months of December, January and February, but few are the days when the city of Zaragoza wakes up with snow cover. In fact statistics show that there is an average of one day of snow per year. This is due to the situation of Zaragoza with the Ebro valleys and its low position on the Iberian Peninsula, a situation that favours the formation of fog and mist during the winter months, giving the citys streets a mysterious feel!
This climate also gives Zaragoza mild autumns. Both warm and with slightly more precipitation, high temperatures are around 18-20 degrees which is perfect weather for enjoying the citys famous 'Fiestas del Pilar'. During this festival there are numerous activities scheduled on the streets or you can choose to get lost in any of the numerous city parks, full of incredible reds, yellows, greens and browns ... perfect for a romantic walk!
Zaragoza's climate provides the city with short springs, which offer the highest rainfall of the year, especially during April and May, where all corners and boulevards of the capital are greener and brighter than at any other part of the year. This season is especially short and quickly gives way to the warm summer.
Definitely the most famous aspect of Zaragozas climate and something you are bound to experience if you are in Zaragoza for a longer period of time, is the 'Cierzo' north wind that intensifies the cold in winter! The wind can also serve to soften the intense summer heat, cooling the night time temperatures, so you are left to enjoy an evening on the citys terraces, boulevards taking in the events and concerts that the city organises during the summer months.
'El Cierzo' is a wind that blows through Zaragoza with differing intensities, from a mild and pleasant breeze to winds with considerable force. This wind is present an average of 353 days a year, making it only 12 days a year that this wind so typical of the Ebro Valley doesn't make an appearance in the Aragonese capital!
